And here we go again, this time with some aircraft something something.. and some sci-fi thingy.. with some vague inspiration of Red Alert vehicles and Unreal Tournament, but no references used. I have been practicing that perspective drawing I mentioned before, which is two-point perspective in this case.
I had a lot of fun doing this drawing, and it usually makes the result so much better! And the reason it went so smoothly this time i think, was that i wanted to cultivate that feeling I have when I just grab a simple ink-pen and some printer paper doodling around. Nothing fancy, just experiment with forms using simple lineart. This picture is done digitally though, but I made a "ink-pen brush" and a printer paper pattern as background. The brush is made setting pen pressure to dependent size, transfer set to transparency slightly set by pen pressure, dualbrush with a grainy textured brush, noise enabled and some color noise applied. The background is my "printer paper pattern" which i made by scanning in a simple paper, and made it tileable using the filter/other/offset tool. There will be a more refined version arriving soon, with value and color.

Major doodle-O-mania and perspective drawing!

Well, i haven't been as active here as I hoped to, but I guess life itself is kind of an obstacle sometimes.. I have lately been working as a Workshop Assembler for personal cars (nothing fancy and definitely not creative, but it helps paying the rent at least). But as i feel the urge to develop my creative side, i have spent almost every lunch and coffee break on drawing some random doodles. And now as that employment is over, i wanted to make a collage of every piece of art i made at that company. Everything is done with a standard ink pen and some printer paper, and fused together in Photoshop. It might seem like a huge mess, but there is actually some kind of silver thread beneath the chaos. To the left-hand side there is some clothing, folding and animal studies, in the middle there is fantasy/steam-punk, Lucasarts inspiration and perspective studies, and to the right-hand side there is sci-fi, mechanic, cars and human anatomy studies.

The most valuable lesson i have made from these drawings is the power of perspective acquaintance. Just draw some different shapes like cubes, cylinders, bent pipes what have you, over and over again until you get that unconscious competence which makes making new concepts so much easier. Before i got to learn about 3D-modelling and game development, I had the presumption that drawing in perspective as a concept artist is a waste of time, since you only need to focus on orthographic views (front/side/back) and let the 3D-modeler handle the rest. But as I have developed my understanding for perspective, the concepts I make now is so much easier to get a grip on and understand, because a object have some much "more to tell" from different angles, than a single flat front view. Nowadays it feels like I'm rendering 3D-objects in real-time when i draw, and that is kind of cool feeling actually =)

So to all you guys over there who hates to draw in perspective and find it hard to nail, stop for the moment and go back to the basic primitives and draw them "mindlessly" over and over again, because if you make it too hard for yourself, it will fry your brain and you will put down your pencil, which of course is kind of counterproductive. Just google and youtube perspective drawing, and you will find all you need!

Good luck and have fun!!
From this very moment, I've decided to rehash my old and quite dusty "blog". This was kind of an alpa version of my portfolio, but since i created a new and slightly more "serious" portfolio with Wix (http://tommykarnerfors.wix.com/artbytommy) I thought that this could be more of a progress related blog, where I share a little more than just a couple of pics that im proud of. It could be anytning I've learned through the day, but of course it will relate to art, design, games and aesthetic of some kind, since that is my biggest passion in this present life.

My first contribution of this new era will be my practice in develop my understanding and feel for the beautiful art by Lucasarts, and I think that I share a particular love for the art style of "Curse of Monkey Island". The distorted, slightly fisheye perspective, tottaly exaggerated in all kinds of ways, vibrant colours and solid lineart. This is my progress so far, and from what i have learned so far, it's best to build everyting upp in cubic boxes and build upp everytning in 3D so to speak, and then distort it in a way that just feels right! And I think that quantity before quality is essential for learning a new art style.

Skeleton Grunt

I took the time to refresh an old pic, give it some background and polish the pic overall.

Dude!! I told you! Don't mess with the Soviet Zombie Assassin goddammit!

Well, this is the shit I make up when i listen to music from Rob Zombie   I wanted to convey a dark comic mood, with exaggerated lightning and colors, rough yet fine linart, somewhat dry brushstrokes and a dirty overall impact. It's based on a traditional sketch from my sketchbook!

Alien Commander

This is a concept artwork from the game "Build and Break" that i have been working on. Which was a school project where I and 16 other students worked to create the best possible game in the time span of 10 weeks. The character was is not currently in the game, but might be a part of the interface/menus later on. If you want to see the result, please check out our trailer on YouTube!

Dwarfen Pilot

I was recently introduced to the program alchemy http://al.chemy.org/ , which have the supertastic ability to duplicate every stroke you make. Which saves a whole lot of time and makes quick concepts fun and easy to produce. But not everything in this pic are made in alchemy though. The lineart which have been the "bones" for the image have been made in alchemy, but the values, colours and pretty much the rest of the image have been made in Photoshop.

Ametur Cyborg Marine

Good Evening everybody!
I have been quite busy with school projects and such latley, so the blog has been kind of dead. But now I've managed to create another messed up cyborg =)

DNA-Enhanced Cyborg-Rabbit

Hi folks! It's been a while!

This is a result of plenty hours of refinement, I did not intend to make any speedpaint, just focusing on design and rendering. Originally I did not intend to make any kind of rabbit in my early sketches, but in the end i didn't really know what else to call "it" =)
Did not use any kind of references, other than some vague inspiration of Unreal Tournament, with a more toonish mood to it.
Since i'm a big fan of making about one million different versions of my workfiles along the way (caused by some kind of paranoia?), i'm about to make a workflow process video, where i present images of my process step by step from the sketchbook in my backpack to texturizing in photoshop!

Enjoy!

Barbarian in the dessert - Diablo 3

This is my way to celibate the game we all are waiting for, soon to arrive in our hands. This painting contains an Barbarian inspired by the concept arts from Diablo III. The armor is my own design, but its pretty similiar with the designs by Blizzard. The landscape is very mush inspired from Diablo II, Act II. Its made in 16:9 format in resulotion 1920x1080, so feel free to use it as your wallpaper!

If you want to follow the progress, please watch my speed painting recording video at YouTube:

Anatomy Exercise

As I earlier mentioned i have focused on studying human anatomy, so I thought that it might be interesting to share my progress! It might not be much of a tutorial, but I'll post new more pedagogical tutorials as I further develop my own understanding of the human body.

Elder Orc Shaman

This piece is obviously inspired from Wold of Warcraft, but with no clear references more than memory and a portion of imagination.

Immersion

I was inspired to make my own interpretation of pendulums album cover for their newest album immersion.
Enjoy!

Sacred Assasin

During the summer I have done some occasional studies on human anatomy, and just recently made a quick look in figure drawing for fashion design, which inspired me to create this kind of character. I like the idea to combine fashion with technology, but I found out that its not that easy to bring something new to the table. My process have been to first create a rough sketch on the female body, which I refined with vivid lineart. Then on i have focused on playing with lines. Then added colors, applied some volume and bouncing lights as a finishing touch.

The Library of Truth

By inspiration from Alice in Wonderland, I wanted to create my own take of the white rabbit, all suited up and looking suspicious and mysterious. The Library of Truth is pretty much like any library, full of facts and knowledge. Which is wonderful in one point of view, but for another more like a curse since knowledge is hard to undo, for better or for worse. Like some people say "ignorance is a bliss" The door behind is like the metaphor to the rabbit hole, the more you read, the further you step in to the rabbit hole. The question is, how far are you willing to go down the rabbit hole?

Evil Kid

I had a dry of inspiration, therefore i used Jonas Swans tool NIG (No Idea Generatioir), which is available at his homepage at: http://www.m-artnature.se/gallery/
The application generated the words "Evil Kid" and "Pink Shirt", which kept my imagination going for some hours!

Digital Spirit

My aim was to create a futuristic robot with a touch of psycadelic style. This painting is more of an mind experiment, with no vivid references or inspiration. It just accidently looked somewhat alike ironman if you take a look at the upper body, but the rest is from my own mind brainstorming while listening to psy-trance like Infected Mushroom and Astrix.

Grunt of Spades

I aimed to create a futuristic skeleton grunt with a "cartoonish" mood, long and skinny legs with overly dimensionaled shoulder pads. Cant really point out any source of inspiration, its just something that I had in mind for some time and wanted to "put down on paper".

Retro Commersial

I was inspired by old Coca-Cola commercials and posters from the 50's, which really is art in its purest form. I used google picture search and found an artwork in my taste:

This picture is more of an exercise since the picture is already out there, but I wanted to learn this awesome retostyle for myself!
Hope you like!

Smokie

A concept on of a fictional character with inspiration from Nightmare before Christmas and Tim Burton kind of style.
